Réveille
A rainbow skirt of twill
on a tiny human smiling,
curls that hang somehow
straight out to the side
branching from cheeks
like a thought escaping out, stretching wide
between chews of morning bread
soft sighs on mother's lap
those crumbs keep falling downward
and no one sees
her thoughts as they abound
she watches the sedan try to park
then stares at the couple kissing
there on the corner
her cheeks follow the man who runs
with a scowl, his face so wet it drips
And now she spots her mess
perhaps in conversation with the dog,
beneath the chair
whose finding all the crumbs
and watching too, with a stare
